SEND Provision

What is Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND)?

A child or young person has SEND if they have a learning difficulty or disability which calls for special educational provision to be made for them.  A child of compulsory school age or a young person has a learning difficulty or disability if they:

  • have a significantly greater difficulty in learning than the majority of others of the same age, or
  • have a disability which prevents or hinders them from making use of facilities of a kind generally provided for others of the same age.

SEND at Ernulf Academy

We are committed and passionate about ensuring ‘Achievement for All’, through setting high aspirations and providing a high-quality teaching and learning environment, as a priority by all members of staff. Therefore, everyone within the Ernulf Academy community plays a role in supporting pupils with additional needs, and all teachers are teachers of pupils with SEND. Our quality first teaching, and carefully planned provision ensures that the needs of all pupils are met at all stages in their educational journey. Furthermore, our specialist SEN team work alongside other key staff in the Academy including the Senior Leadership team, the Transition Coordinator, the Exams Officer, Attendance Officer, Behaviour and Culture lead, Heads of Year, pastoral support officers and teaching staff to holistically support our SEN pupils to be successful in their academic journey. The SEND team consists of highly skilled and experienced HLTAs (Higher level teaching assistants), each linked to one of our year groups as a SEN year group coordinator.

It is our objective to identify pupils who may have special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) as swiftly as possible; to assess these needs and to work from the pupil’s strengths and difficulties to apply support and provision to meet identified needs. Furthermore, we recognise the importance of genuine communication and partnership between school, parents and external professionals in ensuring effective provision. We review SEN need regularly, following a termly process of Assess, Plan, do, Review (APDR).
